Chapter Thirteen: Visits To You

Mark’s POV

The doctors let us go in two at a time Miranda and Chelsea went in first. Collins leaned against Mimi’s shoulder, I could feel the tension between her and Roger rising until he stood up, “Fuck this.” He looked over at Collins, “Man, I can’t do this tonight. Angel will understand.”

Mimi shook her head as he left.

Miranda and Chelsea came back into the waiting room both of them red-eyed and sniffling. Mimi stood and hugged her. After that Collins and Mimi went in while Angel’s mother and sister left.

Mimi came out alone wiping her eyes, “Mark....”

I stood up putting my arms around her she leaned her head against my shoulder.

“I don’t feel good,” she whispered.

I pulled away from her to look at her face, “Should I get a doctor?”

She shook her head, “No more doctors please.” Mimi stared up at me shifting a little where she stood, “How much money do you have?”

“I don’t want to go home.”

“Mimi, what are you talking about?” I tightened my grip on her shoulders.

“Have you been feeling sick at all?”

“Not at all. What’s this about-” She pulled me outside.

“You would tell me right?” Mimi was shaking a little she wouldn’t look me in the eyes, “We’ve been careful it’s just that you know condoms don’t always protect against....” her voice cracked and she started crying, “Mark, if I make you sick I don’t know what I would do.”

I pulled her tightly against me, she’s just scared from seeing Angel in the hospital I told myself. Scared of making me sick like Angel. I kissed her head trying to calm her down, “Shhh, baby shh I’m fine. Why did you want to know if I had money?”

Once she had calmed down enough to speak clearly, “I think you should get tested.”

“Mimi....is this because of Angel or are you.....” I swallowed back emotions that tried to choke me, “Are you okay?”

She opened her mouth to speak then closed it.

“Tell me.”

“I’m worried about you, Mark, I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.” She leaned her head against my shoulder again.

Sighing put my head against hers, “If it will make you feel better I’ll get tested tomorrow.”

“Yes.” I eased her back to look into my eyes, “I want to spend tonight with you.”

She sniffled, “What about Roger?”

“Don’t worry about him,” I said, “I’ll handle it on my own.” For the first time wasn’t afraid of facing Roger with the truth about us. “I do have some money I was just thinking if you don’t want to go home maybe we could go get a room.”

She half smiled, “I’d like that.”

The Hotel Room

Mimi’s POV

He smiled at me as he slowly climbed into bed. I moved my hands over his pale chest and neck gently pulling off his glasses I set them on the night stand next to the bed.

As much as I loved him something didn’t feel right, Angel was in the hospital fighting for her life she wouldn’t want me to be at home crying for her, she would want me to have this time with Mark, this wasn’t about her. Life had gotten in the way these passed few weeks, he was busy with his new job and his personal work. Mark once told me that if he could never film for himself he would cease to exist and when his job consisted of filming on a strict deadline he felt as though he were losing his own identity as a film maker. He wanted to create something from his own heart to share with the world and to hopefully touch someone through it. His goal was not unlike Roger’s only Mark handled himself much differently.

I felt sad as he lowered me onto the soft bed, not for myself I was almost twenty, a stripper and positive what did I have to offer the world? The realization was an old one and no longer upset me when I thought about it, but Mark had so much to offer the world and being with him was a major risk.

I slipped the latex sheathe over him praying to whoever was listening that he would be safe. My fingers entwined with his, I let him enter me making us one.

“I love you,” he whispered pressing a kiss on my forehead, he moved slowly squeezing my hands harder each time.

“I love you too,” I said, his blue eyes stared into mine for longest time then moved over my body as if trying memorize me by heart. Closing my eyes I let him guide both of us into satisfying climaxes.

A few days later

Mark’s POV

“How are things with you and Mimi?”

I looked up from the Styrofoam cup holding my tea a little surprised by Angel’s question. “Oh they.....they’re okay.” It was a lie but I didn’t want to trouble Angel with the news I was getting my test results for HIV only Mimi knew.

“I can tell there’s something you’re not telling me is Mimi okay?”

“She’s fine. I’m fine.”

“Honey, did anyone ever tell you you are a terrible liar.” He smiled a little then his face grew serious, “What’s going on?”

I felt my stomach churn, I was going to go mad if I didn’t tell anyone, “She wanted me to get tested after your first night here she was really upset-”

“Do you think you are?”

“No I mean I haven’t felt sick or anything at all.”

Angel nodded, “What about Mimi? Is okay?”

I wasn’t sure how to respond to that, “She said she has the flu I told her to take a few days off work, but I haven’t seen her today so I don’t know if she listened to me.”

“What about Roger?”

“He sold his fender.”

His eyes widened.

“I know, and bought this shitty car he’s really planning to go.” I sipped what was left of my tea and tossed it in the trash can. “We don’t talk much at all anymore.”

“I’m sorry about that, honey.”

“It’s fine our friendship was rocky before all of this happened.”

There was a knock on the door and Collins came in, “Hey Mark,” he said moving to Angel’s bedside, “Hey baby,” he kissed his forehead.

I stood up, “Well I should probably go.” I hugged Collins then Angel, “Mimi said she was going to come by tonight.” I watched the couple for a moment at the door, Angel was so pale and barely lift his head this dear friend had done so much for all of us.

I let out a sigh of relief and stuffed the paper into my pocket. I knocked on Mimi’s door, no answer. She must have gone to see Angel already. Pulling open the door to the loft I saw Roger out on the fire escape, I set my camera bag down on the couch and joined him. “Hey.”

“Where have you been?” He asked lighting up a cigarette.

“I was at the hospital visiting Angel.”

“For five hours?”

“Maureen needed help with some new protest she’s working on,” it wasn’t a total lie I had gone by but Maureen and Joanne had help from their other lesbian friends I wasn’t exactly needed.

“What’s that dyke working on now?”

The phone rang. “Something about this museum not allowing gay and lesbian art in the new exhibit.”

Roger laughed.

It rang again, “Hold on let me get that.” I ran inside and grabbed the phone just before it when to voice mail.

“Mark?” It was Mimi. I looked around to make sure Roger wasn’t listening.

“Yea it’s me. I have good news, baby, I’m negative. Where are you? I just stopped by your loft and you didn’t answer.”

“I’m at the hospital, Mark, Angel’s dead.”
